Character: Helen Takahara la Guido
Fandom: Helen ESP

Personality: Helen is a pretty average girl, all and all. She's kind, polite, diligent, and all she really wants is to make friends and be happy and live a simple life. It's not as if she's bad at making friends, once people figure out how to communicate with her she gets along with pretty much everyone. Her kindness is to the point where random strangers will stick up for her, as shown when bystanders attack and kill a dog that's near Helen because the dog has a bad reputation and they're worried about Helen's well being. She's memorable, making people smile a lot. She's the type of person that gets free food at the local stalls she goes to just because Helen always goes to the same places with a smile on her face.

Don't be fooled though! Helen isn't just sugary sweetness. She does have a motherly streak to her. Helen once communicates with a comatose patient (telepathically) who expresses a wish to die. After a brief conversation, where Helen is nice, the comatose patient decides that he wants Helen to die with him. Helen 'yells' at him, telling him that he doesn't understand anything about living if he wants to die before his real living has begun. In that way, she can be very stern if it is needed.

Also she's pretty determined to do things despite anything in her way, including her thrice disability. Helen is blind, deaf, and mute but she doesn't really think much of it anymore, despite only being disabled for five years of her life. Instead of thinking "I can't go to school because I have disabilities" she thinks "I can't wait to go to school, I hope I can make friends!" This is why I stress how normal Helen is in personality, she has average concerns and worries that a teenaged girl would have. Even when she starts developing telepathic abilities, she doesn't think much of them, making her more of observer of the paranormal instead of an active participate. It's not like she goes around seeking strange things, she just manages to bump into them on accident. She usually ends up helping just because it's in her nature to help anyone that's having problems, regardless of if they're a spirit or a human or even a demon. She's just the kind of girl that really believes everyone has good intentions.

History: Helen grew up as a completely normal, healthy girl. She was born into a family that's part french, part japanese with no disabilities to speak of. Five years before the start of the series, she was in a terrible car accident that left her without parents, without sight, without hearing, and without the ability to speak.

Helen suffered a lot with her new thrice disability at first, stumbling into a deep depression in the hospital. But with the help of the nurses and her old dog that she got before the accident, Victor, she managed to pull it together, and she learned braille from one of the nurses while Victor learned how to be a seeing eye dog. Soon after, Helen's Uncle learned of Helen in a magazine article and offered to adopt her.

Ever since then, she's lived peacefully with her Uncle, she even does things like shopping, cooking, and going to school. She still manages to lead a somewhat normal life, even with the strange occurrences she keeps enduring because of her developing psychic abilities.

Timeline: After Chapter 17.

Abilities: After Helen is involved in an accident, which leaves her thrice handicapped, she begins to develop and show different psychic abilities. However, these are not voluntary, she kind of just goes along with her normal life and gets sucked up into supernatural stuff in the process. Basically if she uses psychic powers, normally, it's accidental.

Her most regular power is communicating telepathically, and she's been shown to do this several times in different chapters. Sometimes it's in person, sometimes it's through her dreams. She's communicated with animals, spirits, demons, inanimate objects, and even in one instance, a comatose victim. Aside from animals, all of the things have been related to the supernatural or have been close to death.

Helen has also shown some other psychic abilities that she will have no use for in Deme, such as traveling through a phone line and flying. Flying mostly because she had a pretty terrible experience with it and hasn't done it since.

Inventory: One outfit from home (skirt, vest, dress shirt and tie), a sketchpad with a pen to write notes for other people on it, a retractable white cane intended for the blind, and a backpack. (because I'd be incredibly difficult for someone with a thrice disability to carry around this stuff and navigate through Deme.)

Prose Sample: Helen took in a deep breath and smelled something she didn't normally smell at her home in the outskirts: pine. As soon as Helen realized the air around her smelt like the forest instead of the city she knew something was wrong. She couldn't feel Victor, her seeing eye dog around either. The two normally shared a telepathic link, but now, even that was gone. Helen knew that it was likely she may have teleported herself into some new place, she also knew panicing wouldn't make anything better.

Once she finished assessing the situation, her first step was to find a way to some city or town nearby where she could reach the police. Reaching into her backpack, she grabbed her cane and began to walk, being careful to feel with her feet and the cane. Where there were trees, there were roots, and she knew that logically, there could be that and all sorts of things that could trip her up. In fact, when Helen almost trips over a rock, she picks it up and uses it to make indents in the bark of the trees she's passing by so she'll avoid going in a circle.

Eventually, Helen feels the trees clear, and she knows she's reached some kind of opening in the forest. But, by using her own feet as a measuring stick, she discovers she's only in a small clearing only ten paces wide or so. She sighs lightly and decides to take a break. Sitting down, Helen goes through her backpack to see what she has. She recognizes the texture of her sketchbook right away, and finds the pen attached to the binding where she left it. Good, now if she needs to communicate with someone it'll be easy to do.

But... what's this? Helen takes out an object that she's never felt before... is that braille she feels? Yes! She lightly brushes her hand over what feels like is a keypad with braille. She accidentally hits a power button, because with her other hand she can feel a flat surface where braille appears and disappears under her fingertips. From this, she can gather that this is some kind of communication device, and this must be some way to contact other people. After all, from what she reads in a matter of a few minutes, everyone seems very friendly! Eagerly, Helen begins to type up her own message to submit to this device.

Journal Sample: Hello! My name is Helen Takahara. It's very nice to meet you! Even though I'm not sure who's reading this.

I hope no one minds, but I could really use some help. Would anyone happen to know where we are? I need to get home as soon as possible, my uncle will be very worried. I wonder if I can bring him home something special, like the time I went to Aomori and brought back apples. But now I'm just rambling, sorry! I guess I'm nervous, talking to someone I don't even know. I'm normally good at keeping things to the point.

Anyway, if anyone could tell me where I am, that would help a lot! If I know where I am I should be able to get home on my own, one way or another.
